Change Your Brain Every Day by Daniel Amen, MD

Change Your Brain Every Day by Daniel Amen, MD

Change Your Brain Every Day by Daniel Amen, MD

Page by page, this book offers readers a daily dose of brain wisdom.

Change Your Brain Every Day: Simple Daily Practices to Strengthen Your Mind, Memory, Moods, Focus, Energy, Habits, and Relationships by Daniel G. Amen, MD is a helpful resource for life. These pinpoint questions help you pay attention to the daily state of your brain. Like the check engine light on your car, these 366 practices keep your brain functioning at high efficiency. Page by page, the book offers readers a daily dose of brain wisdom, based on 40 years of experience at Amen Clinics.

Dr. Daniel Amen spices his book with humor, authority, wisdom, and gentleness. He speaks to the reader as he would speak to a family member. He desires healthy living and longevity for everyone, and breaks down his brain habits into 366 tiny steps. In this activity-oriented book, each step leads towards the desired goal of the reader.

Knowing our brains can digest small habits, I especially enjoyed how the author does not complicate the process of brain healing. He is kind and patient with his words, not judging or shaming readers for their faults and failures. If this eventually becomes an audiobook, I would listen to it daily as I prepare for my day!

“Change Your Brain Every Day” by Dr. Daniel Amen is brilliantly written with compassion for the reader. Yet, he does not enable bad behavior or make excuses like a codependent mother. Doc Amen desires change in his readers. He wisely shows them how to get from where they are today, to where they want to be in the future. Step by step, and easily digestible!

The Secret Garden Devotional by Rachel Dodge

The Secret Garden Devotional by Rachel Dodge

The Secret Garden Devotional by Rachel Dodge

This is a perfect gift for a gardener (like me).

As a gardener, I was immediately attracted to “The Secret Garden Devotional” by Rachel Dodge. What a joy to open the pages and discover beautiful art inside. The drawings are worthy of a collector’s bookshelf. The words on each daily page are wonderfully written. I especially like the connection between the original Secret Garden and this modern devotional. Very impressive and likable!

There are 30 devotional stories in this book. These stories connect with chapters in The Secret Garden book. I especially like how the author lists the book chapters alongside her devotions.  This book is filled with Bible verses, personal application, and prayer. The artwork is fabulous!

This is a perfect gift for a gardener (like me). My coffee table at home is stacked with garden books. My daily planner is garden-themed and green. I’ll read this book daily while sipping some herbal tea. This book is so amazing, I’ll probably give a few copies to my family and friends, along with a live plant.

The Writers Journey by Travis Elborough

The Writers Journey by Travis Elborough

The Writers Journey by Travis Elborough

Follow in the footsteps of some of the world’s most famous authors.

The Writers Journey: In the Footsteps of the Literary Greats by Travis Elborough reads like a collection of Wikipedia articles. An encyclopedia of short biographies, this collection focuses on well-known authors. Notably absent from the collection are the world’s most famous authors C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.  I am a former school librarian, and I feel this book would be useful for middle school libraries.  A good book for kids writing research papers or debating topics. The research is concise to accommodate many biographies. Many of the chapter titles are cute and whimsical. Yellow maps and historical photos help readers visualize these well-known authors. The list of biographies at the end of this book demonstrates the research involved in creating this collection. Educators will appreciate the concise chapters. Students will use the resource list to further explore one of the well-known authors.

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo

Book Cover Blue with white text

The author mines letters, speeches, and online content and crafts a blueprint for writing.

The Bezos Blueprint: Communication Secrets of the World’s Greatest Salesman by Carmine Gallo is well-researched. The author has analyzed and scrutinized twenty-four letters written by Jeff Bezos to Amazon shareholders. Anyone who likes literary research will enjoy this book. The author mines letters, speeches, and online content. He then crafts the resulting blueprint- the subject of this book.

Carmine Gallo entertains and educates his readers. He presents a new writing concept in each chapter. He then uses a writing sample from Bezo, quotes a writing book, and delivers exceptional results.

The Bezos Blueprint: Communication Secrets of the World’s Greatest Salesman by Carmine Gallo is listed as a business and leadership book. The category is fitting for the content. However, I would also include this as a writing book or literature study book. Not just a book, this has the elements of a fantastic college course. Each chapter in the book is worthy of examination. As a leader of a large international ministry, I find the authoritative writing style breeds success. As a writer, I find the elements of sentence and grammar refreshingly brilliant. Cover to cover, this book is a useful resource. Like me, you’ll want to read it more than once.

This book is helpful for business people. It’s also helpful for authors, writers, and bloggers. There are many great tips on writing, word choices, metaphors, and sentence structure.

“Simply put, fancy words put people to sleep. How do you decide when to pick a short word instead of a long one? The answer is simple. Use short words to talk about hard things: a crisis, a complex idea, or a big idea that you want listeners to remember.” -Carmine Gallo

As a book reviewer, I have read a few other books about Jeff Bezos. The Bezos Blueprint: Communication Secrets of the World’s Greatest Salesman by Carmine Gallo is unique by focusing on the communication style, rather than the accomplishments of Bezos.

About this Book

The communication and leadership secrets of Jeff Bezos and how to master them, from the bestselling author of Talk Like Ted.

Jeff Bezos is a dreamer who turned a bold idea into the world’s most influential company, a brand that likely touches your life every day. As a student of leadership and communication, he learned to elevate the way Amazonians write, collaborate, innovate, pitch, and present. He created a scalable model that grew from a small team in a Seattle garage to one of the world’s largest employers.

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo reveals the communication strategies that Jeff Bezos pioneered to fuel Amazon’s astonishing growth. As one of the most innovative and visionary entrepreneurs of our time, Bezos reimagined the way leaders write, speak, and motivate teams and customers.

The communication tools Bezos created are so effective that former Amazonians who worked directly with Bezos adopted them as blueprints to start their own companies. Now, these tools are available to you.

Far From Home by Mabel Ninan

Far From Home by Mabel Ninan

Far From Home by Mabel Ninan

Uprooted into the busyness of America, a story about immigration and Christianity.

As a Ministry Director, I often receive requests to endorse Christian books, websites, and products. With limited time available, I choose carefully and pray before making any decision. Recently, author Mabel Ninan contacted me about her new book Far From Home by Mabel Ninan. Her topic sparked immediate interest. And I did not hesitate to “say yes” to her request. Once the manuscript arrived by electronic file, I poured a delicious latte and devoured the book.

Mabel is the story behind many women in my community near Silicon Valley, California. She takes off the veil of mystery and shares her experience. Quiet, soft-spoken, and respectful of her new surroundings, Mabel feels unnoticeable. She experiences insignificance and frustration with her new surroundings.

Yet in her native land, Mable is powerful, well-respected, connected, and highly educated. Because of her husband’s job transfer, she leaves her value and identity in her native society. Then she seeks purpose in a foreign country.
Uprooted into the busyness of America, her story explores immigration as a “trailing spouse.” Her initial isolation and her struggle to regain importance are deeply internal. She struggles to connect. Even at the local coffee shop, where she is awakened by the rudeness of the barista on duty.

Looking for her identity in a new culture, Mabel opens her Bible to discover a true identity in Christ. Powerful skeins (loosely coiled threads or yarn)  are woven into her testimony.
This is a must-read for merging cultures into the Christian faith. How can we invite REVIVAL if we are not accepting the citizenship of ALL God’s people?

Mabel’s story invites me to examine my Mother-in-Law, an immigrant from the United Kingdom. In World War 2, she worked as a British decoder, New York runway model, and national security.

And my Great-Grandfather, an immigrant from Ireland worked in the coal mines and later died of lung cancer.

Mabel’s story also reminds me of my neighbors next door, immigrants from Mexico and joyfully living as an uprooted family. Or my former boss, an app developer from Ukraine who shares his Christian faith with a generous heart. Even my husband’s Silicon Valley IT department, where they celebrate all cultures and religions with weekly meal gatherings.

Instead of looking through the mini-blinds, shuttered windows, or over the rim of a Venti Latte… it’s time we take off American ambivalence and love our NEW neighbors.
Mabel reached out to her Christian community with intentional vulnerability. She experienced the love and identity of Christ through Bible study groups, church attendance, and spiritual growth- Far From Home.

Far from Home: Discovering Your Identity as Foreigners on Earth by Mabel Ninan

ENDORSEMENT FOR MABELS BOOK: Beautifully transparent, Mabel Ninan shares her insight from a unique experience of immigration. Yet the revelation of her modern history is also a reflection of Biblical history when God moves. Inside the stories of uprooted people, we discover the heart of God. This book is a beautiful reminder of our citizenship in His kingdom.  – Christine Abraham, Founder & Executive Director Bible Café™ Ministries LLC

ABOUT THE BOOK

Explore the intersection between culture, identity, and faith in this new release from an earthly immigrant who gained a spiritual perspective.
What is my purpose? Why do I exist? A sense of self and belonging are two questions many of us struggle to answer.
And what if you are a foreigner in another land?
How does one adjust to a new culture? Discover their place in a new society?
For Mabel Ninan, born and raised in India and an immigrant in America shortly after marriage, the search for those answers sent her on a journey that led to an unexpected and exciting discovery.
God revealed she was not only an earthly immigrant but also a spiritual one, created with a unique calling to impact His kingdom. Mabel’s renewed perspective imbued her with joy and hope, urging her to share the message with others.
Drawing from her personal experiences and examining the lives of biblical heroes, Mabel sheds light on what it means to live as a citizen of Heaven on earth. Far from Home will inspire you to:

  • Embrace your identity as a foreigner on earth.
  • Make your home with God.
  • Find community and common purpose with fellow sojourners.
