Write for Life by Julia Cameron

“Writing, after all, is not meant to be torture.” Julia Cameron

Write for Life: Creative Tools for Every Writer (A 6-Week Artist’s Way Program) by Julia Cameron is an essential book for writers. In this six-week method, writers discover coaching and assistance for their art. Write for Life is an invitation to begin, stick with, and finish your project. Weekly themes are organized by chapters:

WEEK ONE: Priming the Pump

WEEK TWO: Begin Where You Are

WEEK THREE: Trust Your Process

WEEK FOUR: Resist Your Resistance

WEEK FIVE: Dismantle Your Perfectionist

WEEK SIX: Celebrate Your Achievement

After four decades, artist Julia Cameron continues to write three morning pages. She encourages her readers to push beyond their writer’s block and discover true creativity. She describes her morning pages as a “telegram to the universe.” Since she first started the practice of writing three morning pages, Ms. Cameron has published more than forty books. Her method of unleashing creativity works!

What I liked most about this book is the structure of building routines and overcoming roadblocks to writing. I found the author’s expertise and understanding helpful for my journey.

“Too often, when we sit down to write, we reject our initial idea. We rack our brains for something better. But long experience has shown me that my first idea is often my best idea. Writing, after all, is not meant to be torture.” -Julia Cameron, Write For Life

Book Description

A 6-Week Artist’s Way Program

Julia Cameron has been teaching the world about creativity since her seminal book, The Artist’s Way, first broke open the conversation around art.

Now, in Write for Life, she turns to one of the subjects closest to her heart: the art and practice of writing.

Over the course of six weeks, Cameron carefully guides readers step by step through the creative process. This latest guide in the Artist’s Way Series:

– Introduces a new tool and expands on powerful tried and true methods.

– Gently guides readers through many common creative issues — from procrastinating and getting started, to dealing with doubt, deadlines, and “crazymakers.”

– Will help you reach your goals, whether your project is a novel, poetry, screenplay, standup, or songwriting.

With the learned experience of a lifetime of writing, Cameron gives readers practical tools to start, pursue, and finish their writing projects. Write for Life is an essential read for writers who have completed The Artist’s Way and are looking to continue their creative journey or new writers who are just putting pen to paper.

The Writers Journey by Travis Elborough

The Writers Journey by Travis Elborough

The Writers Journey by Travis Elborough

Follow in the footsteps of some of the world’s most famous authors.

The Writers Journey: In the Footsteps of the Literary Greats by Travis Elborough reads like a collection of Wikipedia articles. An encyclopedia of short biographies, this collection focuses on well-known authors. Notably absent from the collection are the world’s most famous authors C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.  I am a former school librarian, and I feel this book would be useful for middle school libraries.  A good book for kids writing research papers or debating topics. The research is concise to accommodate many biographies. Many of the chapter titles are cute and whimsical. Yellow maps and historical photos help readers visualize these well-known authors. The list of biographies at the end of this book demonstrates the research involved in creating this collection. Educators will appreciate the concise chapters. Students will use the resource list to further explore one of the well-known authors.

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo

Book Cover Blue with white text

The author mines letters, speeches, and online content and crafts a blueprint for writing.

The Bezos Blueprint: Communication Secrets of the World’s Greatest Salesman by Carmine Gallo is well-researched. The author has analyzed and scrutinized twenty-four letters written by Jeff Bezos to Amazon shareholders. Anyone who likes literary research will enjoy this book. The author mines letters, speeches, and online content. He then crafts the resulting blueprint- the subject of this book.

Carmine Gallo entertains and educates his readers. He presents a new writing concept in each chapter. He then uses a writing sample from Bezo, quotes a writing book, and delivers exceptional results.

The Bezos Blueprint: Communication Secrets of the World’s Greatest Salesman by Carmine Gallo is listed as a business and leadership book. The category is fitting for the content. However, I would also include this as a writing book or literature study book. Not just a book, this has the elements of a fantastic college course. Each chapter in the book is worthy of examination. As a leader of a large international ministry, I find the authoritative writing style breeds success. As a writer, I find the elements of sentence and grammar refreshingly brilliant. Cover to cover, this book is a useful resource. Like me, you’ll want to read it more than once.

This book is helpful for business people. It’s also helpful for authors, writers, and bloggers. There are many great tips on writing, word choices, metaphors, and sentence structure.

“Simply put, fancy words put people to sleep. How do you decide when to pick a short word instead of a long one? The answer is simple. Use short words to talk about hard things: a crisis, a complex idea, or a big idea that you want listeners to remember.” -Carmine Gallo

As a book reviewer, I have read a few other books about Jeff Bezos. The Bezos Blueprint: Communication Secrets of the World’s Greatest Salesman by Carmine Gallo is unique by focusing on the communication style, rather than the accomplishments of Bezos.

About this Book

The communication and leadership secrets of Jeff Bezos and how to master them, from the bestselling author of Talk Like Ted.

Jeff Bezos is a dreamer who turned a bold idea into the world’s most influential company, a brand that likely touches your life every day. As a student of leadership and communication, he learned to elevate the way Amazonians write, collaborate, innovate, pitch, and present. He created a scalable model that grew from a small team in a Seattle garage to one of the world’s largest employers.

The Bezos Blueprint by Carmine Gallo reveals the communication strategies that Jeff Bezos pioneered to fuel Amazon’s astonishing growth. As one of the most innovative and visionary entrepreneurs of our time, Bezos reimagined the way leaders write, speak, and motivate teams and customers.

The communication tools Bezos created are so effective that former Amazonians who worked directly with Bezos adopted them as blueprints to start their own companies. Now, these tools are available to you.
